Potential Conflict Between Deals for 9/11 Responders
The Associated Press is reporting on a potential collision between a legal settlement for 9/11 first responders and a bill making its way through congress. The bill had been dormant for years until recently pushed forward by a House committee. The recent settlement offers first responders to the 9/11 attacks compensation for the negative health effects they suffered from the environmental damage caused by the event. The bill offers similar compensation. One of the concerns regarding the bill is that it may offer more compensation than a recently offered settlement but public employees, including police and firefighters, would be ineligible due to a provision in the bill that prevent public employees from getting paid twice by the government for the same injury.Among many injuries and health problems that followed 9/11 many first responders and others in proximity to the attacks have developed asthma. Environmental factors can lead to the development of asthma.
