Hyposmia: Why Not to Treat Your Sinus Infection Lightly

The National Newspaper has a story about a case of hyposmia, partial loss of the sense of smell, due to the under-treatment of a sinus infection. As outlined in the article partial loss of smell--or full loss, referred to as anosmia--is a condition to be taken seriously. Smell is a vital part of the way we interact with the world around us. It tells us when food is bad, when something is burning, or even when there is a gas leak. Our sense of smell can act like an early warning system. A sinus infection can effect that sense of smell during the infection but may also effect it afterward.Sinusitis can lead to many serious complications if untreated. Hyposmia is but one possible effect of the infection. While in the case referred to in this article it is suspected to be only temporary it's possible that a bad case of sinusitis could permanently impair a person's ability to smell. If you are suffering from a sinus infection, particularly a chronic sinus infection, contact our office to set an appointment and learn about your treatment options.
