HEPA Filters and Asthma

Recently a study was done to evaluate if putting HEPA filters and having rodent control with mice would be successful in improving asthma. Some schools had bi-monthly cleanup of rodent feces, dust, and other material that had accumulated in schoolrooms. The mouse was the only antigen that was consistent with asthma measured in the classroom. The average student with HEPA versus sham HEPA filter had 0.1 school day days less asthma and the group with rodent management program had 0.4 day less of symptoms. Both data points were not significant. The only significant data point was fewer school days in the HEPA and pest management group. We will have to investigate whether lower antigen levels will correlate with greater therapeutic benefit.
