Cosmetic Products and Skin Rashes
Many chemicals in our environment can cause skin rashes. For example fragrance mix in many of our cosmetics shampoos and other cosmetic products cans cause rashes. The basics of fragrance mix include isoeugenol, eugenol, cinamic aldehyde, balsam of Peru which is an oil of the tree and fragrance mix as well. Nickel is the most common cause of sensitization. Nickel is found on zippers, piercings, earrings, and watches. If one is exposed to nickel for thiry minutes in one week or ten minutes 3 times in two weeks can sensitize the skin. The mechanism involves a two step process of the chemical touching the skin and activating a dendritic cellβthe radar of the skin immune systems. The message then activates the t-cel that causes the damage. There are also different forms of formaldehyde that keep the bacterial count down. All of these chemicals can cause contact allergy on the skin
