Urticaria or hives can be caused by an autoimmune disease such as thyroid, lupus, partial gene feathers poisoning, or a viral infection. Usually autoimmune treatment is advised if hives persists for greater than 6 weeks.  Hives rarely progressed to throat closing but can be extremely irritating to the point of affecting sleep and ability to concentrate at work or at school.

Patients need to be aware of their autoimmune predisposition, especially women who have not had children.  Pregnancy tends to exacerbate these conditions and bring them on after the birth of the second child. Initially we treat this with 4 times the normal dose of antihistamine. We then add montelukast if patient fails to respond. If symptoms continue for several months, Xolair or monoclonal antibody are the treatments of choice available.
