Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis develops in an allergic skin. From 50 to 70% of cases, it begins before age 5. It typically involves patterns in the cheeks, the arms, and the back of the head. Top layers progress to the clefts of the elbows and behind the knees in adults.  Normal-looking skin is diseased on a microscopic level and bacteria invade deeper into the skinβ€”even in patients who do not have this medical condition.  This causes patients to become positive to many foods and many pollens. Allergy testing in these patients are generally false positives or not related to the skin disease or food disease. These patients have higher levels of food allergy as a tolerance.

We recommend moisturizing and sometimes sterilizing the skin with bleach baths. There are other treatments considering topical steroid creams and nonsteroid creams, ultraviolet light, and ultimately biologic such as Dupixent.
