Tumor Misdiagnosed Sinusitis
Boston.com has an article about a man whose brain tumor was originally diagnosed as a sinus infection. He was diagnosed and operated on five years ago after the headaches he'd been suffering became more than he could bear. The initial diagnosis of sinusitis was based on the headaches complaint. One might be tempted to look skeptically on diagnoses of something as average as sinusitis after hearing about an incident like this but that would be wrong. Sinusitis is far far more common than brain tumors and a patient complaining of headaches is much more likely to have a sinus infection than an aggressive, life threatening brain tumor. Chances are, despite stories you read in the paper and on the internet, that when your doctor says you have sinus infection, you have a sinus infection. If you are concerned about misdiagnoses remember that your self-reporting of symptoms is vital to diagnosis and be aware of and report on any changes or symptoms, even ones you don't think are important or may not be related. Let your doctor have all the information she needs to treat you as best as they can. For questions and concerns about sinusitis and diagnosis and treatment options, contact our office.
