The Washington Post has an article discussing the popularity of ear candling, also known as coning. As is stated in the article ear candling is an unproven remedy for an ill-defined group of ailments. In fact, it is considered dangerous by doctors and the FDA. Ear candling can cause burns, perforated eardrums, and ear canal blockages. It's not a proven or recommended remedy for sinusitis or any other ailment that it may be suggested as a solution to.The practice has a poorly-defined history with no research showing its efficacy in easing symptoms of any patients illness. It's primary therapeutic function is to cure patients by melting and removing ear wax. Ear wax is good for you, it trap dirt and debris that may enter the ear canal and contains anti-microbial agents that fend off infection. There is no evidence ear candling remedies ear infections, migraines, sinusitis or any other illness. For those who have a condition like chronic sinusitis the danger in pursuing a treatment like ear candling is the delay in real treatment. Delaying treatment can prolong or even significantly worsen a condition like chronic sinusitis.
