Be Wary in the Summer Heat
New York City hit 103 degrees fahrenheit on Tuesday, the hottest it's been in the city since 2001. While the rest of the week promise to cool down it's still expected to be above 90. During a heat wave multiple heath dangers are present. First, of course, is the danger presented by the heat itself. Second, is the poor air quality that is coupled with the heat. When the temperature starts to exceed 90 degrees it's best to take care with activities. Limiting exercise and strenuous activity, particularly during the afternoon when temperatures can reach their peak, is important. Making sure those particularly susceptible to the heat, children, the ill, pets, and the elderly are properly taken care of is important. Even if they have air conditioning checking in is important. Stay in the shade and keep hydrated. Keep physical activity to a minimum. If you or anyone you care about starts to feel faint or ill in the heat its best to get them to a doctor or emergency room as soon as possible. With the heat comes a stronger concentration of ozone in the atmosphere. High levels of ozone result in poor air quality and that has serious effects for those suffering from any kind of respiratory ailment. If you have asthma this can be particularly bad. Stay inside if at all possible. Especially avoid being outdoors in the mid to late afternoon. Ozone levels peak around that time and complications are much more likely to occur. Pay special attention during a heat wave to any breathing difficulty. If you experience trouble seek medical attention as quickly as possible.
