What Are the Fall Allergies

Fall has arrived in full swing in the East Coast of the United States and its rather unknown allergies are also here. Common fall allergies in New York during this time of the year are primarily triggered by airborne allergens, such as pollen from specific plants and mold spores. These allergies can cause a range of symptoms, from sneezing and runny nose to itchy eyes and congestion.

  • Ragweed Pollen. Ragweed is a major culprit during the fall season, releasing tiny pollen grains into the air. This pollen can be inhaled and trigger allergic reactions in many people. Other plants that can trigger fall allergies are the pollen of burning bush, cocklebur, Lamb’s-quarters, pigweed, sagebrush, mugwort, tumbleweed and Russian thistle.

  • Mold Spores. Mold thrives in the damp and decaying vegetation of the fall season. As leaves and plant debris pile up, mold spores become airborne, leading to allergic symptoms when inhaled.

  • Dust Mites. While not exclusive to fall, dust mites can aggravate allergies year-round. However, their populations may increase in the fall due to humidity changes and increased indoor heating.

  • Indoor Allergens. As temperatures drop, people spend more time indoors. This can expose them to indoor allergens like pet dander, dust, and indoor molds, leading to allergic reactions.

Symptoms of fall allergies often mimic the common cold and can include sneezing, nasal congestion, a runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, and sometimes coughing. Allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to these substances, perceiving them as threats.

To manage fall allergies, individuals may take antihistamines, decongestants, or use nasal corticosteroid sprays. Dr. Lubitz can provide guidance on allergen avoidance strategies and prescribe immunotherapy (allergy shots) for severe cases. Reducing exposure to allergens by keeping windows closed, using air purifiers, and maintaining a clean indoor environment can also help mitigate symptoms.
